Meet Oliver - Trombone, Tuba, Euphonium Teacher

A native of Houston, Texas, Oliver Barrett has quickly established himself as a leading voice in both performance and pedagogy. Upon completing his graduate studies at the Juilliard School, Oliver received an invitation to perform as a member of the Finnish Radio Symphony in Helsinki, Finland for their 2015-2016 season, where he participated in international tours of Japan and Austria. In addition to his position with the Radio Symphony, Oliver was invited to play as guest principal trombonist in the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra for the internationally broadcast Sibelius Competition. That same year, Oliver competed as a finalist for the International Trombone Association’s "Lewis Van Haney Philharmonic Prize" at the International Trombone Festival.

After returning to New York City, Oliver was selected as one of eighteen musicians to join Carnegie Hall’s prestigious, Ensemble Connect—“a two-year fellowship program for the finest young professional classical musicians in the United States”. Oliver has performed at many music festivals around the country, some of which include the Round Top Festival Institute; Aspen Music Festival; Colorado College Summer Music Festival; and the National Repertory Orchestra. Additional orchestral highlights include performances as principal trombone with the Princeton Symphony, American Symphony Orchestra, and NOVUS NY.

As a chamber musician, Oliver is a member of the New York-based brass sextet, The Brass Project. With this group of “six superb brass players” (Philadelphia Inquirer), Oliver has participated in residencies at Music from Angel Fire (2016 & 2017); Rockport Music (2019); Bravo! Vail (2019); The Aspen Music Festival and School (2018 Fellowship Brass Ensemble); and Haverford College (2018). In 2017, Oliver founded MOD Brass, an ensemble with modular brass instrumentation dedicated to performing music by living composers. In 2018, MOD Brass was recognized by the center for innovation in the arts at the Juilliard School of Music and was invited to give a masterclass on interdisciplinary collaboration.

Oliver was formerly Lecturer of Trombone at Princeton University; Assistant Director of Brass Bands at St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s School; a Teaching Artist Apprentice with the New York Philharmonic; and the Graduate Teaching Assistant at SUNY Stony Brook University, where he is completing the final requirements to obtain his Doctor of Musical Arts in Trombone Performance. Oliver has presented performance masterclasses abroad at the Tallinn Brass Festival in Estonia, as well as workshops in the US; specifically on applied instrumental instruction at the Juilliard School of Music, and week-long summer intensives with schools around the greater Houston area, where his family is based.
