Meet Laura - Violin & Viola Teacher
Laura Matharu is a violin and viola teacher and active violist based in Seattle, Washington. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Philosophy from Seattle University and is currently completing a Master of Music in Musicology at Western Washington University. Laura brings both strong performance experience and a thoughtful, individualized teaching approach to her work with students of all ages and levels.
Laura has several years of teaching experience, including private instruction in violin and viola and coaching young musicians in both individual and ensemble settings. Her teaching emphasizes healthy technique, musical curiosity, and confidence, while adapting lessons to each student’s goals, whether they are learning for enjoyment, preparing for auditions, or developing strong foundational skills. She is especially passionate about helping students build a positive relationship with music that supports long-term growth.
Her pedagogical approach is informed by her studies with April Swansiger, a pedagogy student of Mimi Zweig, whose teaching philosophy emphasizes strong technical foundations, consistency, and mindful skill development. Laura also currently studies viola with Joseph Gottesman, and values continuing her own musical education so she can bring current performance and pedagogical insights into her teaching studio.
As a performer, Laura is an active orchestral violist and has worked with regional symphony orchestras throughout Washington State. She has participated in masterclasses with internationally recognized performers and values the perspective that active performance brings to teaching. Laura believes that modeling discipline, curiosity, and joy in music-making is an important part of being an effective teacher.
Laura believes music education should be supportive, structured, and inspiring. She strives to create a welcoming learning environment where students feel encouraged to explore their creativity while developing strong technical and musical foundations. She works closely with students and families to set clear goals, support consistent practice habits, and celebrate progress at every stage of learning.
