Meet Jennifer - Piano Teacher

My name is Jen, and I'd be honored to introduce your kiddo to the piano! I believe each child is special and unique, so I use an individualistic, child-centered, experiential approach to teaching. Each lesson is fun and engaging and incorporates play into the learning process.

My aim is to build upon your child's own natural musical strengths to foster a love of all types of music. Your child and I will celebrate each baby step along the way to help build the foundation for self-confidence and self-esteem, qualities that benefit them greatly in school. Playing the piano not only produces positive cognitive changes but can also help your child to learn to regulate emotions, and to soothe and reduce stress as they get older.

I was a preschool teacher for over six years and have a fondness for working with children. I also have experience teaching little ones with special needs. I studied child development as an undergraduate at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where I researched infant pitch perception. It was magical to see their faces light up with big smiles and wide eyes at the sounds. Fascination with music is innate - even the youngest respond to it.

After earning a bachelors degree in Psychology in 1988, I earned a master's degree in education from Harvard University in 1993. I also studied ear training at Mt. Holyoke College and Fundamentals of Music Theory at Amherst College. I started taking piano lessons at age 10, but after learning the foundations, I became self-taught; I began composing for piano at 17. When I was 18, I competed in the Merrimac Valley Music Festival, where I tied for first place.

I teach traditional music theory, ear training, and performance but also incorporate varied and novel approaches to spark each child's interest. My teaching style is warm and casual, and I tailor lessons to the child's natural pace. My goal is to bring out each child's inner musician! The magic of creating music lasts a lifetime.
