Meet Jean - Piano and Guitar Teacher

Jean's passion for music is contagious. For over seventeen years, he has taught more than a hundred students, including kids and adults of every level. His joy for music is also rooted in his active musical life; he has played guitar with world-class jazz musicians on three continents. Jean studied guitar with Serge Merlaud, Michel Perez, and most recently, the masterful Peter Bernstein. Under the wings of a student of Nadia Boulanger, Bernard Maury, he became fascinated with the science of chords and modes. His interest in composition grew and led him to refine his skills with Pierre Bertrand and Sylvain Beuf. He has been an active member of the quintet Goud (featuring Josiah Woodson) and the duo Tema (with Italian pianist Giuseppe de Gregorio), projects documented on the EPs Firstep and Glucose.

Born in France, he relocated to Princeton, New Jersey late 2014 and promptly began work on his debut album, The Beauty of Differences (out June 15, 2018), featuring world-class drummer Rudy Royston and eight-time Grammy-nominated vocalist Tierney Sutton. The album received critical acclaim. A four-star review from the prestigious magazine Downbeat, a HIT from the Couleurs Jazz Magazine, and it remained for ten weeks in the top 100 of jazz radio airplay in the US according to JazzWeek. The album was also in the selection of the best albums of 2018 by Downbeat Magazine, Ruth Fisher of Jazz FM (London, UK,) and journalist Bill Milkowski. Jean has also shared the stage with Dan Tepfer, Jon Irabagon, Rogerio Boccato, Orlando Le Fleming, Thomas Marriott, John Hadfield, Fiona Monbet, Armel Dupas, Karl Jannuska, and the Plumes Ensemble.

He performed in festivals and venues such as Earshot Within, Edmonds Jazz festival, Jazz at Saint Germain des près, Charlie Jazz Festival, Jazz at Vannes, Pleyel, the Olympia, Boxley's, Calluna, the Triple Door, and the Stade de France.

Jean regularly receives commissions for production, arrangements, compositions, and film scoring, including the full-length documentary Le Bonheur en Suspens that aired on French national television and the award-winning animation film The Blue of Salt. Jean loves to share his knowledge and passion for music with all ages and skill levels.

Sending a big shout-out to Jean! I’ve been taking guitar lessons with him for about a month and I could not be happier. I’m learning tons and he keeps me motivated. He’s able to adapt to your level and create customized lessons that inspire you to learn and practice. I plan on seeing him for years!

Our son started guitar lessons with Jean when he was 5, at an age when other guitar teachers in the area were not taking students. We were SO lucky to find Jean. Our son took lessons with Jean for about 2 years and now he is 7 and absolutely loves playing guitar. We were so sorry to lose Jean when his family moved from Princeton. In fact, our son’s current teacher, who only takes students 8 and older, took our son on at 7 because she was so impressed with how much progress he had made. She keeps remarking that his previous teacher did all the hard work and now she gets to have so much fun teaching our son!

Jean is not only a great and accomplished musician, he’s a great instructor who can help you master and overcome any obstacles in order to improve your playing of either piano or guitar. Great guy! Easygoing and professional!
