Meet Tommy - Piano, Guitar, and Percussion Teacher

Tommy Halkyard is a percussionist/drummer, guitarist, and producer from Las Vegas, NV and based in the Seattle area. A player of many types of music and a fan of many more, he has played percussion and the drums for 10 years, the guitar and bass guitar for 6, and has been writing, recording, and producing music for the last 5 years.

Growing up, Tommy was drawn to music from a young age and took piano lessons from the ages of 6 to 10 before discovering the drum set upon reaching middle school. Between middle school and early high school, he took part in just about every music function around school and elsewhere that he possibly could. Midway through high school, Tommy moved with his family to Charlotte, NC, a move that ultimately showed how important music was as a source of happiness in his life. Within 6 months of arriving, he took up the guitar and bass guitar, relearned the piano, and joined two bands: a band at a local church as a bassist and a grunge rock band known as Full View as the drummer. It was during this time that he realized how impactful music can be as both an emotional outlet and a source of pure, unfiltered happiness.

A graduate of Colgate University of the Class of 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Tommy took lessons in the guitar, drums, and piano and later taught lessons in each of these instruments along with music production at the Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester in Boston, MA during the summer of 2019. He also has been writing and producing music since just before the start of his time at Colgate, primarily focusing on singer/songwriter-based work, EDM, and hip-hop.

During lessons, Tommy loves to have fun and base the curriculum around the student's musical interests while also finding ways to think outside the box and break new ground. He’s happy to go at any pace necessary to make sure that every student is both learning and finding new ways to express themselves and, most importantly, make music!
