Meet Paul - Piano, Voice, Guitar, Percussion Teacher

Paul Gunsberg is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in drums/percussion, guitars, keyboards, and music theory. He began his musical journey at age five when he received his first drum kit, with formal drum lessons starting a year later. Growing up in a musical family in metropolitan Detroit, he was exposed to many different musical styles including rock, jazz, classical, and various types of world music. He taught himself guitar and piano as an early teen and by age sixteen was playing drums professionally in various music groups in and around Detroit.

Upon graduating high school, he received a scholarship to attend The New England Conservatory of Music (NEC) in Boston, Massachusetts majoring in Jazz Studies. At NEC, he was a member of the Honors Ensemble in Contemporary Improvisation and studied with jazz greats like Bob Moses, Cecil McBee, and Jerry Bergonzi. After graduating from college, he moved back to Detroit for several years, where he continued to play professionally and began teaching private music lessons. In 2012, he moved to New York City where he continued to teach privately and perform. He recently relocated to the Seattle area with his wife and daughter.

After more than twenty years as a professional musician and twelve years as a music teacher, he has developed his own unique approach to musical pedagogy with an emphasis on learning the fundamentals of technique and theory, as well as developing ear training and reading. Paul welcomes students of all ages and abilities.
