Meet Ajda - Associate Voice & Piano Teacher
Ajda Stina Turek was born in Slovenia. Ever since she can remember, their house has been full of joy and music. Her grandfather, who is an accordion player, would teach Ajda and her younger cousin to sing traditional Slovenian songs. As he brought a lot of music into her life, Ajda believes her grandfather is the one most responsible for her becoming a singer and pursuing a career in music.
When Ajda was 7 years old, her parents had decided to enroll her in the music school. Initially, she played the violin and finished 8 years of classical training. At the same time, she was also a part of a choir “Domzalcki” where she had a chance to record lead vocals for two CDs with children songs.
Ajda has always enjoyed singing more than playing an instrument and for this reason, her parents suggested her to continue her studies at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet in Ljubljana, where she majored in Jazz Music/Voice and studied with Berklee alumni Nada Zgur.
Ajda won many vocal competitions and was also a part of recognized Slovenian Festivals. She performed with various Big Bands and jazz ensembles in Slovenia, Croatia, Norway, Italy and Austria. One of her biggest accomplishments was being a finalist of The Riga Jazz Stage 2014 in Latvia. In addition, her performance was published on an official Riga Jazz Stage CD. In 2013, Ajda attended the Umbria Jazz Clinics where she was the only one among other 60 vocalists to receive the Berklee Scholarship.
After coming to Berklee in the Fall 2014, Ajda’s main goal was to present herself to the Boston’s audience. Every semester she hosted a recital, which each time presented a different side of her.
She has been collaborating with many different artists for their recording projects and was also chosen to sing on Maggie Scott Jazz Series for three times. She performed at the “Great American Songbook: Tribute to Laurel Canyon” and was a part of “Singin’ and Swingin’ Ella Fitzgerald at 100!”, “Curtain-Up” and the musical "Nine" as Lilliane La Fleur. In March 2018, Ajda has released her debut EP "Sonder", on which she worked with more than 25 musicians from all over the World. "Sonder" was first presented in Slovenia at a sold out tour of her international quartet and was streamed all over European radio stations for the World Jazz Day on the 30th of April.
Ajda is very honored for being the only singer receiving the “Outstanding Jazz Vocalist Award” at Berklee College of Music in 2017, the award for "Best Jazz EP" of October 2018 from Akademia Music Awards, and to become a graduate from Performance, at Berklee College of Music, in August 2018, with the highest destinction Summa Cum Laude.
